Aims of the Conference

Taking place in the political heart of Europe, the main objective of this Soul of Europe conference is to exchange views and ideas on the important challenges which Europe – and in particular the European Union (EU)– is facing, and to undertake a common visioning on the mission and future of Europe.

In light of the course of events over the last decade, it seems that the future of Europe and the EU has never been so much at the centre of people’s attention and forefront of political debate as today. Overwhelmed by recurring economic crises, the influx of refugees, terrorism, strengthened national self-interest and shifting political landscapes, Europe finds itself amidst a number of unprecedented social challenges. Efforts of the European Union to build ‘an ever closer union’ based on solidarity among its Member States and the motto to stand ‘united in diversity’, are seriously challenged. In the face of these events, the call for social renewal based on the threefolding ideas set out by Rudolf Steiner a hundred years ago, seems more relevant than ever!

The question arises however, how we can work with these ideas in today’s realities and which human qualities we need to develop a sustainable and inclusive future in Europe and beyond?

This conference is held in English, German and French with simultaneous interpretation for the lectures/panel session. The approx. 15 workshops run at least in one of the mentioned languages.

Feedbacks

Participants‘ and Contributors‘ feedback on the Conference

José Schütt

To me the Soul of Europe Brussels was very enlightening, because I got a lot of new information. It was also very heartening, because I felt that we are with many people, in many places, not just in Europe, but all over the world..
Finally, it was encouraging, because I felt that we want to stand together for things that matter in the world.

Nodar Belkania

Sabrina Wendtner

I’m very grateful to having had the chance of participating in the conference. I enjoyed many of the lectures and workshops and found them incredibly inspiring. Yet, what I enjoyed probably the most was that so many great people found their way to the conference and that all those meetings/sharing with them enriched my life. Through those meetings with new friends from Italy and Ukraine I could feel the soul of Europe – weaving between us. That’s the only idea for improvement I have regarding the next editions: leaving more space for this weaving between people by implementing more breaks and workshops instead of too many lectures. Thank you very much for all of your work! Everything was so well organized!

Jean-Pierre van Aalst

As for myself I am quite astonished what I was allowed to learn in such a short time and what capacities I was allowed to listen to. Still it seemed to me one way or another that we were so few people to listen and discuss all these good things. I hope you find ways to reach out for a higher level of interest. Thank you very much

Luc Vandecasteele

It was a festive experience, to meet more than hundred people from whole Europe – from Great Britain to Ukraine – in the mid of the solemn buildings of the European capital. Here are working thousands of coworkers, to build and develop our European Union. Interests and strivings are often, but not always, positive and directed to collaboration, as we know. But still the European project is an amazing experiment in history. So we can hope that the experiment of this conference, to share the best of our visions and ideas about the real soul of Europe, can add its contribution into the “pool of ideas” where European citizens and administrators are inspired from.

Alexander Gerber

Over all it was a great conference with a good mixture of diverse lectures, workshops and culture. It is always interesting to hear new aspects and so to gain new knowledge and ideas. Thanks a lot for the good organisation! I have only one critical remark: It was a kind of inner conference. I myself am a little bit tired to travel from network meetings to network meetings instead to work on concrete improvement projects. If we have conferences they should have a more interesting and open character for the public. We should go more into society instead to work on concrete improvement projects.

Stephan Kirste

Thank you very much for organizing the highly interesting conference. I have enjoyed very much attending it and the warm atmosphere, in which it was held. Down to the least detail, everything was organized perfectly. This included the simultaneous translations. The site was just perfect for the occasion. Most of all the variety of issues dealt with in the presentations was very inspiring.

Christiane Haid

We experienced a different kind of „Soul of Europe“-conference than the last four years. It was shorter, more intensively scheduled, and it took place in the modern surrounding of a big city. Nevertheless there was a warm friendly atmosphere among the people and everything was perfectly organised. Being surrounded by the institutions of the European Union gave to us the experience that we stand with our anthroposophical strivings in the middle of the political international world. Through the contributions of the friends who are activly working in Brüssel we learned that there are possibilities to take influence in the political and moral course of the EU, although spaces are very narrow. Our music-workshop was a joyfull event for the nearly 20 participants. They sang with enthousiasm songs from the different epochs and nations of Europe and  enjoyed listening the piano-pieces.The music belongs to the soul of Europe and therefore it was a good balancing element to the big amount of high-quality lectures. Also the warming-up singing in the morning with all the participants was appreciated and gave a joyfull start in the day. The improvised eurythmy in the evening showed the courage of movement and calmed down the thinking activity towards the artistic observation. The excursions to the EU-Parlament and to the Rudolf Steiner House were precious presents!

Roxanne Ziersch

In many ways the „10th Soul of Europe Conference“, which was for me the first one, inspired me for my life. Due to the variety of lectures on Europe and in particular the EU, its advantages and disadvantages, its deeds and tasks, its ideals and issues, I got a clearer impression of what it means to live in Europe and to be an EU-member. Meeting participants and speakers as well as members of the organization team during breaks and in the workshops I got a wonderful variety of different perspectives. The entire conference has been an enriching studying experience as well as a time of precious encounter to me. I am full of gratitude for the people who made this conference a reality.

Hugo Lueders

Peter-Maarten Bijkerk

Thank you very much for organising this wonderful conference in this great venue! It was a great pleasure and very inspiring to participate. I liked the speakers and how the lectures fit together. The workshops were very well prepared and interactive with sufficient time for questions. Good that you managed to attract people from different ages and with many different backgrounds. It was valuable to listen to and speak with anthroposophists who work in Brussels and learn from their efforts and successes to make anthroposophy fruitful in the political center of Europe. For sure I will visit the Steiner House in Brussels when visiting the city again in the near future.

Sirpa Marianne Sinimaa

The conference in Brussels to me was very inspiring. Though I had never been to Brussels before visiting the EU – Kommisions, Parliaments or other Represetentatives and Executors. And I definitly feel a satisfaction that all this exists. Europe has started to become a Soul, through more and more consciousness. Step by step we can continue on a larger scale to find humans, who are ready to think not only about a European body and borders, but also what is living inside this body and how it acts in it’s surrounding. The conference in Brussels gave me a chanche to „have a look“ into their work and now I understand better, what is and how things are happening in Brussels. The Soul of Europe has become my favorite of the Anthroposophical Conferences, because it really connects people around Europe, but not only Europe!
When I talk to my friends and neighbours they get curious….and sometimes they ask me: What is the soul of Europe? Sometimes sceptic, some time positivly surprised. Because I also lived and travelled in countries outside of the EU. I realized how much Europe means to the whole World and the enormous impact it has in the World (without beeing proud or arrogant). And one thing I experienced this time very strong, focusing on myself: I have become more European – without loosing my individuality! I would like to mention how fruitfull the singing is with Christina and Evert in the mornings.
The Book “ Growing up Healthy in a world of Digital Media“, I need in my daily life and the support of „Eliant“ is so important! Thank you!

Betti Merschmeyer

During the past few months I became more and more resigned about our world and me being in this world… this was my impulse to follow the conference.
… and now I feel alive inside again. Many thanks!

Anselma Remmers

The conference ‚Soul of Europe‘ really inspired! I went home with a very warm feeling as if I really had come in touch with the soul of Europe her self! The lectures were of high quality and had a interesting diversity – yet they were very much connected to each other and building a red line through those two days. Meeting the participants as well as the lecturers and organisers was very easy and warm. Being so close to the EUbuildings gave a special feeling of being very nearby all this, and that democracy is not at all ‚far away‘. Gerald Häfner’s call to all of us in his closing words stay with me, that we allways are able to do something and to contribute. Also I got a great admiration for the people who work so hard behind the screens as EU-lobbyists for the anthroposophical case. The musical and eurythmy -contributions made it a conference of head and heart. The will has been woken up to dó something within my circle of influence.
A great THANK YOU to the organisers and sponsors!

Ine Quadekker

For me it is, that through this event, we got the possibility to get connected to this soul of Europe. On Friday the program started quietly with the history of an area, which , at the moment exists as nowadays Europe. The best I could do on Saturday was, to dive concentratedly into the themes of nowadays, and on Sunday I was joyfully surprised to be able to commit fully the thought of being united with Europe now and in the future with all my heart. The final song put it all together. It was an extreme event of high level, which asked a lot of concentration. The atmosphere was very friendly.

Anonymously

Maria Jung

Thank you so much for this conference. It has been very inspiring and a pleasure to meet so many interesting and motivated people. Such events are a unique opportunity where people with different backgrounds and ideas are coming together in order to discuss and rethink our current political, economical, social and legal system. The threefolding ideas its philosophy set by Rudolf Steiner provide a source of creating and forming future oriented ideas/solutions, by the integration of humanities.

Pascal Gilles

This congress on the soul of Europe has defined a path for evolution of my own soul.
Thank you for the quality of the organization and thanks to all for the final song where I could feel Europe real.

Michael Hübner

We, Michael and Susanne, were satisfied with all lectures and working sessions, especially Lectures 1 with Susan van Kempen, Christine and Andrej were of great content. Andrej´s description of eastern and western Europe was very convincingly, he talked about 9th century, mentioned Pope Nikolaus I when the separation of the church was prepared. Mario Damen gave a lot of explanations how the different EU branches are working and so we went off quite satisfied and are looking forward to the next conference in far East. Thank you very much for all your preparations.

Paul Mackay

Dr. Harrie Salman: Europe in the Western World Order(ENG)

In 1917 Rudolf Steiner warned that Europe would be incorporated in the Anglo-Saxon world order and be brought into a state of economic slavery, if Central Europa would not adopt a new social vision. We are now in this situation in which corporations and banks dominate global economy and politics. Culture has largely become entertainment. In this working group we will discuss how we can give new spiritual impulses to change an immoral and ever more criminal world order.

Mario Damen: Solving the European paradox: from Identity to Cooperation (ENG / DE)

This workshop aims at discussing questions about European integration both from the perspective of national identities, as well as concrete political and economic developments. How can we find the right balance between national identity, a globalizing economy and the will to exercise our democratic rights in an ever more complex world ? What role does the European Union play in finding this balance ?

Evert van Grootel & Cristina Popa-van Grootel: Music of Europe – Singing and listening. A journey through centuries and nations

Dr. Luc Vandecasteele:

Gerhard Meister: European Credit Initiative – Financing the common good (ENG)

At this workshop, we want to introduce the European Credit Initiative and talk about it. With the initiative, we are preparing a European Citizens‘ Initiative proposing an amendment to the Statute of the European Central Bank. It is the goal to open up a ¬path to an associative economy and to make companies inde-pendent from a profit-oriented financing.

Simone Cuomo: Europe at the crossroads: a new view on the EU (ENG)

Recent events have triggered a far-reaching debate on the future direction of the European Union (EU). In view of the major challenges confronting society, people are wondering what the EU actually brings us. In this workshop we will try to look past the stereotypes surrounding the EU by assessing its nature and performance from a threefold perspective and on the basis of practical experiences and examples.

Susan van Kempen: The challenges of Europe (ENG / NL)

“How can we, each in our own way, contribute to the issues of our time, to the challenges of Europe?”

In this workgroup we will explore the range and the reach of this question.

Michaela Glöckler: ELIANT and the Availability of Choice (ENG):

It is interesting, that we find no rules and regulations in the gospels of the New Testament, but ideals about humanity and dignity to live for. Such ideals and Christian values are encouraging and give us inner strength and energy. From such a spirit, ELIANT`s task is to support economic and social initiatives and raise awareness for the availability of choices. Because, what is freedom of choice, if we have less and less choices available ? In the workshop we present concrete projects and activities and discuss the possibilities for their realisation in different countries.

Carsten Berg: The future of citizens’ participation and democracy in Europe (ENG)

How can we awaken the transformative power of the individual through modern forms of citizens’ participation? We will explore the potential of the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) as the world’s first instrument of transnational participatory democracy and look at finalized and ongoing ECIs such as ELIANT, Ban Glyphosat and Attention
5G. This workshop also aims at discussing the potential of a future ECI for a Constitutional Assembly to rebuild the democratic foundations of the EU.

Saskia Lupini: Puzzled (ENG / DE / FR)

Artistic Workshop: Collaboration through creativity while maintaining individuality; we are all a piece of the European puzzle…

Pieter van der Ree, Willem-Jan Beeren:
Building Europe / Europa bauen (EN/DE)

Using practical space perception exercises, we want to explore how different identities can be used to build and develop the common. In the light of the challenges of European integration, we focus our attention on the relationships between social structure and spatial form.

Jakob Bijkerk: The Social Art to transform Ideas into Realities (ENG)

Europe, as we know it today, has its roots in the end of the 18th century. The democratic impulse, initiated by the Enlightment movement, did adapt various elements of the French revolution: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, resulting in the political movements of liberalism, socialism and communism. In this workshop we will explore these three aspects in a wider contemporarily manner as the starting point for social decision making, on the micro, mezzo and macro levels.

The eurythmy dance ensemble ihoch3 with Jona Lindermayer, Selma Fricke, Emmanuel Rechenberg and Michaela Prader has been working since autumn 2017 on research into imagination, inspiration and intuition. Together with the pianist Michael Gees, who is a master of musical improvisation, they deal intensively with movement improvisation.

Our performance is choreographed to the 1st movement of Beethoven’s piano sonata Appassionata in F minor with improvisational adaptations, both musical and dance. In addition there are improvisations, which can be introduction, resonance or answer to the appassionata. A site-specific dramaturgy is formed in each case. We allow ourselves to be impressed by each place and its people according to the situation. The location becomes a co-designer, a co-choreographer, a co-dancer and the resulting overall composition is inseparably linked to the performance location. The border between art and everyday life is thematized and crossed.
